How to Know if It's Time to Replace Your Awnings?

Those awnings have been your friend through many a hot summer day. If you’re not sure if your awnings need to be replaced, look for these signs that your relationship with them has come to an end.
Your Awnings Are Getting Old
All of the items that you purchase for your home have a life expectancy. Granted, that cast iron pan might outlive most of us, but most items you buy have a shorter life expectancy. Your iron skillet will outlast your patio awnings.
Since awning frames are usually made out of aluminum, they will last for a long time. The moving parts and motor of the awning will often fail first, as will the fabric, particularly if you did not have a very durable awning. The fabric will last from 5 to 15 years: if you’re replacing fabric that has gotten damaged, make sure you choose a sturdier variety next time. You can often replace the fabric without replacing the entire awning; however, make sure that your entire awning is of high quality or you could end up needing to replace other parts after you replace the fabric.
Your Awnings Are Damaged
Storms can take their toll on the exterior of your home. You may notice wear and tear on your roof and gutters. And if you keep your awnings up all winter it’s quite possible that you’ll have a few extra branches on or in them come spring. Heavy snow can weigh on your awnings, and even prolonged rain can damage them, making it easier for them to grow mold. If you have the option of adding retractable awnings, consider doing so as it allows you to tuck your awnings in for the winter.

Your Awnings Are Very High Maintenance
Non-retractable awnings can be high maintenance. They require more cleaning and repairs simply because they are constantly exposed to the weather. Many people add new retractable awnings for this reason.
If you have mobility challenges, it can be difficult to use manual retractable awnings. In this case, it could be worthwhile for you to install awnings that are motorized instead. That way, you can even set out your awning before you step outside.
Your Awnings Aren’t Working in Your Space
If you decide to expand your porch or patio, your current awnings may look out of place in the space. You want an awning that gives you the coverage that you need. If your awning is tiny compared to the space that you need to cover, consider investing in a new one that will add to your outdoor lifestyle.
Keep Your Awnings Beautiful
How can you choose the best awnings that will last for a long time? Choose awnings that incorporate high quality fabric that is easy to clean, and choose awnings with metal parts that are slow to rust. A retractable awning can also help you hide the awning away during fall and winter storms, preventing it from damage over the years. Taking care of your awnings will help you maintain them well for many years to come.
