How to Make Your Home Cozy This Winter

Hygge is the art of being cozy. How can you make your home warm and welcoming during the winter season? There are many simple ways to add relaxation to your home: try these on for size.
Bring Nature In
Adding natural elements to your living space can make it more relaxing. This includes everything from a natural fireplace to bowls of nuts and cones on display. Focus on warm woolens and natural clay mugs for that hot cocoa.
Add Color to Your Entryway
Invite people into your home and invite yourself to enjoy your home with a splash of color. This could be a thick and colorful welcome mat or a brightly-painted front door. It could be some seasonal flowers just outside or inside the front door. Welcome your visitors and welcome yourself home as well.

Arrange Your Chairs
Make sure that your chairs and couches are arranged in the most inviting way possible. Whether that’s around a coffee table or next to a fireplace, these seating areas should be easy to access and inviting, with cozy blankets, a place to put a coffee cup, and a stash of reading material as well.
Add Textiles and Texture
Soft and warm and textured spaces are welcoming and relaxing. Add pillows to your couches, and add a throw to each chair. Apartment Therapy suggests that you “Frame textiles for wall art” as well. Soften harsh lines with window coverings and rugs. Consider adding sheepskins to chairs and benches that would otherwise be hard. Look for round objects to use as focal points in your decorating.
Focus on Seasonal Lighting and Scent
It’s not just what you have in your room, it’s the light and smells in the air around you that matter as well. Add candles to the room whenever possible to add a quiet, relaxed feel. Consider adding essential oils or fragrant candles or plants for a natural-smelling, cozy space. According to the Family Handyman, “Scents like pumpkin pie and cinnamon may seem silly, but they’ll increase your home’s cozy factor immensely.”
Offer Snacks
Sharing food and drink with friends or indulging yourself is one of the best parts of the winter season. Set up a seasonal tea station in your living room so that you don’t need to go far to enjoy a good book and a hot beverage, and put out light snacks such as bowls of nuts that are always available for those who are settling in for a winter’s reading session.
Make Life Easier
As you make your home welcoming, reduce some of the stress in your home as well. Add opportunities for family moments, such as a games cupboard. Add read-aloud books or classics to your shelves. Subtract some of those difficult seasonal duties such as worries about snow and ice by installing gutter heat, so that you can take time to appreciate the beauty and serenity of the falling snow rather than worrying about how the snow and ice are piling up in your gutters.
