The Importance of Proper Roof Protection: Shielding Your Home from the Elements

New Harry Helmet Lednor Home Solutions Templates

Your roof is a vital element of your home, but because it’s above your head, you may not be accustomed to spending a lot of time thinking about it. It’s easy to overlook something that you don’t often look closely at. However, neglecting to think about your roof is a mistake. In order for your roof to protect you and the rest of your home, you have to take steps to protect it as well. There are some things you can do to keep your roof safe from damage and deterioration so that it can continue to perform well for you.

Clean Your Gutters

One simple way to make sure that your roof stays in good condition is to make sure that your gutters are clean and clog-free. The roof system and the gutter system are intertwined – a problem with one is going to affect the other.

If your gutters have clogs, water will back up onto the roof, pooling and pushing its way under the shingles. This can cause rotting, roof leaks, and other problems. A large amount of debris in your gutters can also weigh them down. This may cause the gutters to sag, but that means that they’ll pull away from the roof – possibly taking roofing materials with them. If your gutter system is in good working order, your roof is much more likely to stay whole and healthy.

Ensure Proper Ventilation and Insulation

Condensation in your attic can be a problem for your roof. You’ve heard that warm air rises. When it rises to the attic and meets cold air seeping in from outdoors, condensation forms. If that persists, the moisture from the condensation can lead to mold growth and rot on the roof, weakening its structure.

Proper insulation keeps indoor and outdoor air where they belong, and ventilation facilitates the air circulation needed to prevent moisture from forming and remaining in the attic and on the roof. If you’re not sure whether or not you have the right ventilation and insulation in the attic, have it checked by a professional. Not only can a condensation problem be bad for your roof, but mold growth can be hazardous to your family’s health. It’s in everyone’s interest to make sure the attic remains dry in all weather conditions.

Prevent Ice Dams

Ice dams occur on the roof when snow melts partially, then refreezes into ice. When this happens, it will tend to happen over and over again in the same spot, and eventually, an ice dam will form. Ice is heavy, and if the ice dam falls, it can pull down parts of your roof right along with it. It can also damage your gutters and anything it falls on, including people if they’re underneath the roof at the time. Preventing ice dams is a safety issue as much as a roofing issue.

Consider installing roof heating to prevent ice dams from forming. Roof heating involves installing cables that warm up enough to melt snow and ice and prevent it from re-freezing and forming an ice dam. Instead, the melted snow and ice run off the roof and through the gutter system like rain.

Trim Nearby Branches

A nearby tree could do major damage to your home if you’re not careful.

There are plenty of good reasons to plant trees near your home. Apart from looks, the shade they cast can keep the temperature down in hot weather, making your home more energy efficient. However, you have to be careful. Dead limbs and branches can fall off unexpectedly, and if they’re too close to your home, they can land on the roof and cause major damage. Limbs and branches can also be blown off during a storm or heavy wind.

Keep an eye on the trees around your home. Find out what the pruning schedule should look like for the kinds of trees you have and follow it. Make sure to have any dead limbs and branches removed before they can cause damage, and especially before a storm season.

Check for Missing Shingles and Other Damage

A few missing shingles can lead to a bigger problem.

There’s no substitute for simply visually inspecting your roof yourself. Look for bare patches where shingles are missing as well as any other signs of damage. You may see pieces of shingle or roof hardware in your yard as well.

One or a few missing shingles may simply need a simple replacement, but they could also be a sign that it’s time for more extensive repairs or even a roof replacement, so take missing shingles seriously. If you notice large bare patches or if you lose several shingles more than once, it’s time to contact a roofing professional to find out about possible solutions.

Get Regular Inspections

Even if you haven’t noticed signs of damage yourself, it’s still important to have regular roof inspections. If your roof is still under warranty, you may be required to have regular inspections by a professional to keep the warranty valid. Your homeowner’s insurance may also require it.

Typically, your roof should undergo an inspection every two years. However, if you’ve been through a major weather event like a hurricane or tornado, it’s a good idea to have to roof looked at even if you’re not scheduled for an inspection yet. And of course, noticeable damage to your roof should always be checked out by a roofing professional. It’s just good planning to have your roof inspected frequently – if problems are caught early enough, they may be able to be fixed easily. However, if they’re not caught, they can grow into larger problems that require expensive repairs or an entire replacement before you’re ready.

I have had Gutter Helmets for 20 years. In all that time I've never had a problem until recently a bird's nest found its way into one of my gutters. The installer who came to replace the product was the same installer from 20 years earlier. Now that's impressive. Everyone at Gutter Helmet inclusive of the office staff were professional and a pleasure to work with.

VERY happy with our entire experience adding Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet to our house. Installing this was a great value for us. The gutters are working perfectly in heavy downpours and with year-long leaves and debris coming down from our river birches. Terrific customer service and a first class product.

We needed our roof repaired due to wind damage. After several quotes, Gutter Helmet was the only company that went into our attic to look and see if more damage had occurred. If it wasn't for them taking the extra time to look at everything, we would have had rotting wood under our new roof. They were very professional and gave a fair quote.
