Imagine that your roof is starting to curl, leak, or shed granules. You know it’s time to replace it, but the options feel overwhelming. Metal, tile, synthetic, slate: How do you choose? This is where many homeowners find themselves.

For many, the answer is asphalt shingles.

Asphalt shingles continue to be one of the most popular roofing materials in the United States. And for good reason: This roofing type strikes a practical balance between affordability, performance, and curb appeal. But like any material, they come with both benefits and trade-offs.

This post explores the pros and cons of asphalt shingles in a clear and helpful way so you can make the best decision for your home with confidence. With Lednor Home Solutions, you also get expert guidance backed by over 40 years of experience.

The Benefits of Asphalt Shingles

When homeowners choose an asphalt roof replacement, they often do so because of the beauty and practical benefits it provides. These advantages make asphalt shingles one of the most versatile and homeowner-friendly roofing options available.

Affordability and Cost-Effectiveness

Asphalt shingles are a good choice for homeowners who need to stay within a reasonable budget without sacrificing quality. Asphalt shingles typically cost between $3 and $7 per square foot, which is significantly lower than tile or metal roofing options.

Homeowners choose asphalt shingles for several reasons:

  • They are one of the most economical roofing materials available.
  • They have lower installation costs.
  • They’re a solid choice for lower roofing costs without sacrificing durability.

Ease of Installation and Replacement

The weight and structure of asphalt shingles make them easy for professionals to work with, which is one reason they’re used so widely. This also helps reduce labor costs and speeds up installation, making a new roof more efficient and affordable for homeowners.

Asphalt shingles are:

  • Lightweight and easy to cut and fasten
  • Installed quickly, often within a few days
  • Simple to replace individual damaged shingles without redoing the entire roof

This simplicity also means fewer disruptions to your daily routine during installation, which is a welcome benefit for many homeowners.

Steps in Asphalt Shingle Installation Process

Variety of Styles and Colors

One reason asphalt shingles are so popular is that they offer many design possibilities. Whether you want a classic or contemporary look, chances are there’s an asphalt shingle that fits your vision.

  • Available in a broad range of colors and textures
  • Styles that replicate wood shakes, tile, or slate
  • Coordinate easily with different home exteriors

Leading manufacturers like Owens Corning provide dozens of color blends and profiles that allow you to personalize your roof to suit your home.

Roof Durability in Varied Climates

Today’s asphalt shingles can handle a variety of weather conditions, from wind and rain to hail and humidity. Homeowners can also upgrade to shingles that resist specific environmental factors, depending on the biggest threats in their location.

  • Options available with Class 4 impact resistance (ideal for hail zones)
  • High wind resistance up to 130 mph
  • Algae-resistant coatings for humid or coastal climates

Compatibility with Most Roof Types

Asphalt shingles can be installed on most residential roof structures without extensive reinforcement or architectural redesign. This makes them a practical option for both new builds and roof replacements, regardless of your home’s age or design.

  • Ideal for medium to steep roof slopes
  • No structural modifications needed for weight
  • Can accommodate dormers, valleys, and complex layouts

Their flexibility and compatibility help reduce installation headaches and streamline the project timeline.

The Limitations of Asphalt Shingles

While homeowners overwhelmingly choose asphalt shingles, they are not a perfect fit for every homeowner or situation. Understanding their limitations helps set realistic expectations so you can plan ahead.

Shorter Lifespan Compared to Premium Roofing Materials

Asphalt shingles have a typical lifespan of about 15 to 40 years, depending on material quality, local weather conditions, and how well the roof is maintained. This lifespan is significantly shorter than that of premium materials like metal or slate.

For homeowners, this means the lower upfront cost of asphalt shingles may result in more frequent replacements over time. They are not the best choice for those seeking a lifetime roofing solution. While some high-end asphalt shingle lines offer extended roof durability, they also come with a higher price tag.

Vulnerability to Extreme Weather

Although high-performance shingles are available, standard asphalt shingles tend to wear down more quickly than other types. This is often the case in areas with intense sunlight, large temperature fluctuations, or severe storms.

Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to curling and cracking over time. Additionally, asphalt shingles are generally less impact-resistant than metal roofing unless specifically upgraded to a Class 4 impact rating.

In areas prone to high winds, shingles may also loosen or lift if they are not installed and sealed properly.

Environmental Concerns

Asphalt shingles are made from petroleum-based products. This means their production and disposal can impact the environment.

Asphalt shingles:

  • Are not recyclable in many municipalities
  • Contribute to landfill waste (nearly 12 million tons per year in the U.S.)
  • Are energy-intensive to produce

Some manufacturers now offer asphalt shingle roofing with recycled content or carbon-reduction strategies, but this varies widely.

Maintenance and Granule Loss Over Time

While asphalt shingles require less maintenance than wood, they do degrade over time. Granule loss, algae streaking, and curling may occur, especially in wet or wooded environments.

This means homeowners will need periodic roof inspections. Algae-resistant shingles reduce discoloration, but not for the entire life of your roof. Homes may also need minor repairs during storms or high winds, which will help prolong the life of the roof.

Working with the team at Lednor was a pleasure, from Rich in sales to all follow-up. Our gutter installation was quick, and the new gutters and helmets look amazing. Very professional company!

I installed GH on the upper gutters in 2006 & have had the wonderful experience of no problems. I installed Leaf Filter on the lower gutters in 2010. Thru time, grit & leaves collect on the gutter screens & semi-annual cleaning is necessary so water doesn’t overrun the screens. I’m replacing LF w/ GH. GH is as advertised - maintenance-free!!

Lednor recently installed a rolling sun shade on my house. The entire process went very smoothly and I would recommend them and their product to anyone. The salesperson was very professional and was able to answer all my questions. The installers were likewise very good. The job was done in about 2-1/2 hours and they did a very good job cleaning up after themselves. The sunshade is wonderful. I can use my patio in the middle of the day now which I hadn't been able to do. I highly recommend them.

I am very satisfied with my gutter helmet installation. They were here when they said they would be. Work was timely completed and looks great. Installers were very nice and cleaned everything up. The house looks great. The best part - I do not have to clean them out.
