What’s Included in a Roofing Warranty?

Two years after a roof replacement, a homeowner notices water staining on the ceiling. It hasn’t rained hard in weeks, and now they’re wondering: Is this leak something the warranty should cover, or are they facing an expensive repair?

Roof warranties are one of the most overlooked elements in a roofing project. Many homeowners focus on materials and cost but overlook the nuances between different warranties regarding coverage and protection. This oversight can lead to confusion and financial stress if problems arise.

This guide will help you understand the different types of roofing warranties and what they do and don’t cover. You’ll also learn how Lednor Home Solutions offers complete protection by working with Owens Corning, one of the most trusted manufacturers in the industry.

With over 40 years of roofing excellence and a reputation for craftsmanship, Lednor Home Solutions is here to help you make informed decisions that protect your home for decades to come.

The Three Main Types of Roofing Warranties

Roofing warranties fall into three categories: manufacturer warranties, workmanship warranties, and extended system warranties.

Each serves a different purpose. Understanding the differences is essential when evaluating roofing contractors or selecting roofing systems.

Manufacturer’s Product Warranty

A manufacturer’s roof warranty is the most common type of roofing warranty and is included with most roofing shingles. It protects you against factory defects in the roofing materials themselves.

A manufacturer’s warranty typically covers issues like:

  • Cracked, curled, or prematurely failing shingles
  • Granule loss that leads to UV exposure
  • Blistering or splitting due to defective materials

These warranties can last 10 to 50 years, depending on the product line and brand. However, many are prorated, which means the amount of coverage decreases as time passes. For example, you may get full material replacement in year five, but only partial credit by year fifteen.

Manufacturer warranties exclude installation errors.

Workmanship Warranty

A workmanship roof warranty is provided by the contractor, not the manufacturer. They protect you against problems caused by poor installation techniques.

Some examples of covered issues include:

  • Improper nail placement or pattern
  • Incorrect flashing installation
  • Inadequate ventilation or sealing that leads to leaks

Not all contractors offer workmanship warranties. Lednor Home Solutions includes them on every roofing job, reflecting our confidence in the training, experience, and quality of our team.

Terms vary by contractor. Some cover a short five-year period, while others (like those from certified installers) extend much longer. Always request documentation and ensure you understand what’s covered.

Extended or System Warranty

An extended system warranty is a more comprehensive option. It blends product and workmanship coverage under one umbrella, often backed by the manufacturer, and is only available through certified contractors.

Lednor Home Solutions is a Platinum Preferred Contractor with Owens Corning, which qualifies us to offer their Platinum Protection Roofing System Limited Warranty.

System warranties typically include:

  • Full coverage of materials and labor
  • Tear-off and disposal costs
  • Coverage for underlayment, flashing, and ventilation components
  • Non-prorated protection for up to 50 years

This type of warranty provides the most robust peace of mind and helps you avoid hidden costs of roof replacement. It also simplifies the claims process, since you won’t have to debate whether the issue stems from materials or installation.

What Roofing Warranties Typically Cover (and Don’t)

Many homeowners mistakenly assume that “lifetime” coverage means everything is included. In reality, warranties contain specific inclusions and exclusions, which can have a major impact when repairs are needed.

What Warranties Usually Cover

Roof warranties are designed to give homeowners peace of mind, but it’s important to understand exactly what types of issues are typically included. A well-structured roof replacement warranty covers:

  • Shingle manufacturing defects
  • Underlayment or flashing failure, if included in the system
  • Labor costs, when workmanship or system warranties apply
  • Repairs for leaks caused by covered materials or faulty installation

With an Owens Corning roof warranty through Lednor, labor and disposal are also included, which adds significant value.

What is Not Covered by Most Warranties

It’s just as important to understand what roofing warranties do not cover. Common exclusions include:

  • Storm damage from hail, high winds, or falling debris
  • Neglect, lack of maintenance, or clogged gutters
  • DIY repairs or unauthorized modifications
  • Aging that occurs beyond the warranty period

Issues outside of the manufacturer’s control are excluded, which is why you should combine your roof warranty with regular inspections and good homeowner maintenance practices.

Maintenance Matters More Than You Think

Many manufacturers require annual roof inspections to keep warranties valid. Neglecting inspections or delaying small repairs could void your warranty entirely.

To protect your investment:

  • Register your warranty after installation
  • Save all documentation and receipts
  • Schedule yearly inspections with a certified roofer
  • Avoid unauthorized repairs

If you’re not sure whether an issue is covered, always reach out to your contractor before taking action.

Tip: Register warranty to avoid voiding it.

Working with the team at Lednor was a pleasure, from Rich in sales to all follow-up. Our gutter installation was quick, and the new gutters and helmets look amazing. Very professional company!

I installed GH on the upper gutters in 2006 & have had the wonderful experience of no problems. I installed Leaf Filter on the lower gutters in 2010. Thru time, grit & leaves collect on the gutter screens & semi-annual cleaning is necessary so water doesn’t overrun the screens. I’m replacing LF w/ GH. GH is as advertised - maintenance-free!!

Lednor recently installed a rolling sun shade on my house. The entire process went very smoothly and I would recommend them and their product to anyone. The salesperson was very professional and was able to answer all my questions. The installers were likewise very good. The job was done in about 2-1/2 hours and they did a very good job cleaning up after themselves. The sunshade is wonderful. I can use my patio in the middle of the day now which I hadn't been able to do. I highly recommend them.

I am very satisfied with my gutter helmet installation. They were here when they said they would be. Work was timely completed and looks great. Installers were very nice and cleaned everything up. The house looks great. The best part - I do not have to clean them out.
