1. Use Annuals to Highlight Fall Garden Beds

Use fall annuals such as autumn sage, aster, and mums to highlight pathways and garden beds. Add them to your front steps and porch decorations as well. These colorful fall plants are versatile and can be part of Halloween or Thanksgiving decorations too, depending on the severity of the weather in your area.

2. Add a Festive Topiary

Use more permanent potted plants as part of a fall display. A topiary can do duty as a feature on your spring porch, surrounded by rainbow-colored annuals, and then it can change into a fall display covered with gourds and mums.

3. Get Cozy

Make your front porch inviting with a small lamp or heater, a hanging lantern, and fall-themed pillows and blankets. Add a rocking chair, a porch swing, or a box to sit on and enjoy the fall evenings.

4. Enjoy the Rain

Fill up fall rain gardens and ponds with water from your gutters, or enjoy a fall water feature as it fills with water from your roof. Make sure that you complete any gutter repair that you require so that the rain falling from the gutters is intentional, rather than an unplanned cascade.

5. Decorate With Garlands and Wreathes

Add a fall wreath that’s as relaxed or as sophisticated as the rest of your decor. Wreaths range from simple twig wreaths to wreaths covered with leaves and miniature gourds. If you love decorating your stairs or porch, add garlands or swags made of real or simulated leaves and vines as well.

6. Add Lights and Lanterns

As the days get darker, add warm yellow LED lights to your home, walkway, or porch. Use lanterns to line your porch and walkway as well.

7. Grow Up

Grow or add cut corn stalks and potted or growing sunflowers to your front garden. Use them to line the walkway, as a background to a garden bed, or in pots at the front porch.

8. Head to the Farm

Create a whimsical display that includes scarecrows and hay bales. Place fall plantings in burlap sacks. This makes it simple to shift to a Halloween theme at the end of October as well. The bonus: you can use the bales as garden mulch once you’ve finished using them as fall decorations.

9. Use Wagons, Buckets, and Boxes

Bring the harvest home with gourds, hay, leaves, or apples in a rustic-looking wagon, bucket, or box. These provide a way to contain your fall display and add a rustic look to your front garden.

10. Expand Your Color Palette

Fall is full of orange, yellow, and red, but feel free to add other colors and expand your palette. A turquoise planter is striking with a display of orange pumpkins, and rich plum colors fill out a fall planter. Think beyond the usual fall colors for a more noticeable and beautiful display.
