DIY Space-Savers for Your Work Space

Published 07/13/15

Having a personal and private space in your home for carpentry, to work on cars, or other projects is a wonderful feeling, and sometimes a necessity. Whether it’s in the garage or a separate workshop in the backyard, your space needs to be stocked and organized well.

Sometimes, unfortunately, the space you’re working with isn’t quite as large as you’d prefer. Though there may not be adequate space, there are tons of space-saving tips you can use to make that small enclosure seem much larger. Following are just a couple of these tips.

Space-saving

Corner Storage

When you have limited storage and the work space is small, it takes some creativity to solve the issue. Building shelves or cabinets at arm level or above is one way to make the most of typically unused space. But one area of a person’s work space that rarely gets used to its full potential is the room’s corners.

A corner shelf is perfect for a space that lacks extra floor or shelf room. Pick the room’s corner within which it will be best to actually build and get into the nooks and crannies. Next, locate the studs in the wall; this ensures that your shelf will be able to hold heavy items. Fasten two two-by-six boards, measured to the preferred length, to the studs with large, sturdy screws. Measure two pieces of plywood, about 3/4-inch thick, to the width of your shelves’ current structure. Screw one piece of plywood on top of the two boards, and the other on the bottom. This corner shelving unit will allow for storage of small, easily lost items. If necessary, you can fit several more pieces of plywood between the boards to serve as additional shelves within the unit.

Pegboard

It can be overwhelming to tackle a cluttered work space. Tools, screws, nails, and other small items take up a lot of room. Free up some drawers and counters by using pegboards hung up on the walls. Adjustable shelves can be added to the pegboards if needed, or you can use the board to store tools by hanging them from the pegs.

Installing a pegboard is super easy, too. Simply choose the size of board that will work best for your needs. Next, find your wall’s studs and screw the board to them to ensure it is sturdy. You can put large washers on the screws to give yourself some space between the wall and the pegboard.

Hanging your tools from a pegboard keeps them out of the way, makes it easy to find them, and will keep them in good shape for longer.

Building something new for your home is a great way to focus on your creativity while also producing something beautiful and/or functional. Having a well-organized work area with plenty of space is not only helpful, but necessary. With the above space-saving ideas, any small work area can have an ample amount of storage.

I installed GH on the upper gutters in 2006 & have had the wonderful experience of no problems. I installed Leaf Filter on the lower gutters in 2010. Thru time, grit & leaves collect on the gutter screens & semi-annual cleaning is necessary so water doesn’t overrun the screens. I’m replacing LF w/ GH. GH is as advertised - maintenance-free!!

Lednor recently installed a rolling sun shade on my house. The entire process went very smoothly and I would recommend them and their product to anyone. The salesperson was very professional and was able to answer all my questions. The installers were likewise very good. The job was done in about 2-1/2 hours and they did a very good job cleaning up after themselves. The sunshade is wonderful. I can use my patio in the middle of the day now which I hadn't been able to do. I highly recommend them.

I am very satisfied with my gutter helmet installation. They were here when they said they would be. Work was timely completed and looks great. Installers were very nice and cleaned everything up. The house looks great. The best part - I do not have to clean them out.
