Thought Leader Series: Pointers on Remodeling Because of Ice Dam Damage

Kara Wilson is the office manager of New England Design & Construction. She is a LEED Accredited Professional, has a degree in interior architecture and design, and in her past worked in residential and commercial design as a designer.

With record-setting snow totals in 2014 in many New England areas, the topics of ice dams are just starting to surface again as the winter months are upon us.

Many homeowners have seen drastic increases in their homeowners insurance due to damage from the previous winter. Some homeowners in the Boston area have seen as much as a 9% annual increase. So what do you do when you see those icicles forming on your roofline, or some telltale damage on the ceiling of your master bedroom?

Ice dams
Icicles are an indicator of ice dams – the bigger the icicles, typically the bigger the problem.

David Supple, owner of New England Design & Construction in Boston, states, “Water is sneaky. After the ice creeps through the small cracks in your roof that the weather has created, it melts and finds its way through your ceilings and walls. How you deal with it can mean the difference between a do-it-yourself cleanup and a costly renovation.”

What to Do When You See Water Inside Your Home

  • Protect your floors first: Flooring is much more expensive to replace than your ceiling or walls, so mop up that water before any hardwood is affected.
  • Carpet should be rolled up, even wall-to-wall carpeting. Padding is cheap to replace, but carpets should be salvageable.

Remove that carpet!
  • If you see water coming through the ceiling, break a hole in your ceiling. It is much more effective to catch the water in a bucket than to have mold issues down the line as a result of hidden moisture.
  • Any drywall damage that occurs must be cut away and replaced, but wood in custom molding can be sanded and cleaned to prevent mold growth.
  • Create a mixture of half bleach and half water to wash sanded wood, and refinish to match the existing pieces.

How to Prevent Ice Dams

A long-term solution to avoid the formation of ice dams is to prevent the transfer of any heat in the building through the roof to the outside by creating a “cold” roof. You can do this by insulating between the rafters on the roof, which should be included in any future renovation effort to mitigate extensive damage from ice.

Ice dams
Insulate between the outside and inside.

Additionally, a self-regulated heated cabling system (like Helmet Heat) can warm up your roof-line and melt snow and ice before ice dams can form. The consistent heat doesn’t allow the dams to form in the first place.

Take action on any ice damage that occurs this year, and protect yourself for the future with the above tips.

I recently had the Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet installed on my house. It not only looks amazing, but the guys arrived on time, were professional and efficiently got the job done. I am very satisfied with Gutter Helmet's attention to detail and fulfilling their work as promised. I will definitely tell my neighbors about the Gutter Helmet.
I have had Gutter Helmets for 20 years. In all that time I've never had a problem until recently a bird's nest found its way into one of my gutters. The installer who came to replace the product was the same installer from 20 years earlier. Now that's impressive. Everyone at Gutter Helmet inclusive of the office staff were professional and a pleasure to work with.
Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet just replaced our roof and we could not be more satisfied. The crew showed up early, worked all day and stayed late, were professional and caring regarding the project and the surrounding impact it had on our property and home. They completed the roof quickly and it looks simply amazing!
VERY happy with our entire experience adding Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet to our house. Installing this was a great value for us. The gutters are working perfectly in heavy downpours and with year-long leaves and debris coming down from our river birches. Terrific customer service and a first class product.
We needed our roof repaired due to wind damage. After several quotes, Gutter Helmet was the only company that went into our attic to look and see if more damage had occurred. If it wasn't for them taking the extra time to look at everything, we would have had rotting wood under our new roof. They were very professional and gave a fair quote.
We just had Gutter Helmet installed on our gutters and couldn't be happier. They provided us with useful information about Gutter Helmet and cleaned up everything, leaving no mess behind. We definitely recommend Gutter Helmet to anyone considering this product.
